Cathedral Finishes strong in the Holy Bowl

Following Cathedral Catholic’s come from behind win over St. Augustine in the Holy Bowl on Friday night, I talked to Cathedral Running Back Tony Johnson. Johnson ran for over 100 yards and had a 77 yard TD run on the first play from scrimmage in the 2nd half. St. Augustine RB Elijah Preston, a freshman, is a name to watch in the coming years. He ran for 173 yards and 2 td’s.

SD Showcase… 2015-16 recap.

On Sunday I made the trek to Mira Costa College中国福利彩票正版app in Oceanside to see the first annual SD 80 Showcase put on by Gamepoint club director Charlie Mercardo. The first four games of the day featured players from the 2015-16 classes.

2015 guard Tommy McCarthy who recently transferred to La Costa Canyon from rival Torrey Pines was the best player in game 1. He shot lights out, distributed very well showing improved point guard skills, forced his matchup into a couple turnovers and was a killer in transition. 2016 guard Brandon Cyrus of Torrey Pines moved here from Canada this summer and has already left a big impression on those who have seen him play. Cyrus was the best player at the showcase among the Freshman and Sophomores. He was active all over the court, scoring in a variety of ways, excelling in transition. He was especially active inside grabbing numerous rebounds. He’ll need to improve his perimeter shooting, but when that happens, watch out! 2015 guard Timmy Saunders of Torrey Pines showed great ball-handling and passing skills, while finishing well at the hoop in his two games. CJ Cadua, a 2015 point guard from Sweetwater, is undersized at 5’6” but really showed that he can stay with the bigger players. He showed outstanding handles and made some flashy, accurate passes in transition. 2015 forward Brady Twombly from La Costa Canyon was very active and finished well at the hoop throughout his two games. He provided the play of the morning when he drove the baseline and finished with a big dunk to get everyone buzzing around the gym. 2015 forward Sam Bockman has good size at 6’5” and took advantage of it in his two games. He crashed the boards on offense and defense and had several put backs. He has a natural strong build, and will be a inside force once he continues on finishing.

Tyrell Robinson… A Duck

Tyrell Robinson following the 29-21 loss to Cathedral Catholic.

Following Friday nights Lincoln-Cathedral Catholic game, I talked to Oregon bound OLB Tyrell Robinson. Tyrell’s twin brother Tyree (a Safety/Wide Reciever) is also committed to Oregon. The twins chose the Ducks over 中国福利彩票正版apps like USC, Washington and Notre Dame because of the opportunity to play Football and Basketball.

Horizon @中国福利彩票正版app Santa Fe Christian game recap

Solana Beach—After starting at the 35-yard line following a kickoff out of bounds, the Santa Fe Christian Eagles got started. It wasn’t too quick though. They went 65 yards over 10 plays running the clock down to 6:03, while working out of the triple option. The Horizon Panthers got their day started but were forced to punt it away after just five plays. After forcing the Eagles to go three and out, Horizon roughed the punter allowing the Eagles to keep possession. The Eagles drove down to the four-yard line before turning it over on downs after an impressive defensive stand by the Panthers. Horizon quickly went three and out, but attempted a fake punt. Quarterback/punter Markel Byrd took the snap, ran right, reversed left and then headed back right. He somehow managed to get the punt away just out of the grasp of several Eagle defenders. To everybody’s astonishment, he managed to launch the punt 65 yards after a generous bounce. Santa Fe Christian then went 67 yards over seven plays, capped off by a Tony Miro eleven-yard TD run just before the half. The Eagles managed to hold the Panthers to just ten offensive snaps in the 1st half. 14-0 Santa Fe Christian at halftime. The 3rd quarter began and the teams traded a couple possessions before the Eagles drove 72 yards over nine plays to add to the lead. After recovering a Panther fumble the Eagles drove 43 yards over 6 plays capped off by a Hunter Vaccaro one-yard QB sneak to go on top 27-0. The lone bright spot for the Panthers came late in the 4th quarter when Anthony Oseguera dove in and blocked the Eagles punt. The Panthers took over on the six-yard line and scored on the 2nd play when Markel Byrd rolled out and found Darren Carrington in the front of the end zone. Both teams took knees to end it and the Eagles were victorious 27-7. The Eagles shredded the Panthers defense with 298 rushing yards.

Poway @中国福利彩票正版app Torrey Pines game recap

Following a 3 and out on Torrey Pines’ first possession, Poway started their night at the 48. Facing a 3rd and long after a false start and intentional grounding, QB Conor Flanagan took off running but lost the ball as he was brought down. Jonathan Raby scooped it up and the Falcons took over. Four plays later the falcons faced 1st and 10 from the 13; QB Mike Ward threw to the right side for an attempted slant. It was picked off by Ryan Sharpe and returned 91 yards for the Titans first defensive touchdown of the season. That really turned the momentum. The Titans added three more touchdowns in a little over a five minute span during the 3rd quarter. That included a 4 yard touchdown by Nehemiah Gross which ended a scoreless streak by the Torrey Pines defense that had lasted 14 ½ quarters. Gross added an 80 yard TD for the Titans in the 3rd quarter. Poway won the game 35-0.
